Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda said KMC will start construction of seven new parks within his municipality this year.
Mayor Bensouda was speaking on Tuesday during his municipal donation of 90 soccer balls to “Nawettan” areas of Kanifing Municipality (KM).
“This year, KMC will start construction of 7 parks, and each park will have a football field, which will be a six per side football field. There will also be an outdoor gym and a children’s play area,” he said.
According to him, they will start construction this month (September 2022), noting that the first park will be at the Buff area and the second will be in Bakau while the five will be separated around the municipality.
Bensouda noted that sport can generate income and be a source of energy, if invested intelligently, while urging other regional administrations and the government to invest more in grassroots football saying that “the youth of country can do more if little is invested in it”.
He further revealed that young people are the lifeblood of the country and they are very interested and passionate about football and sports in general.
“Footballs aren’t a lot as there are only 15 footballs per team. It won’t give them everything they need, but it’s just the start to help improve the leagues and the ‘Nawettans’ in their areas,” he said.
He added that everything starts at the base and if they want to perform at national and international level, they have to support grassroots football, which KMC has done.
Also speaking at the donation ceremony, Tallinding North councilor Babucarr Mansally, who is also chairman of the municipality’s youth standing committee, said that KM always supports the development of sport, not only football but also other sporting events in the country.
Councilor Mansally advised areas to follow their constitution in order to avoid conflicts between them.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ebrima Sawaneh, Chairman of Manjai Sports Committee, thanked the Mayor and KMC for giving them the chance to benefit from the gesture.
“On behalf of my co-beneficiaries, I thank Bensouda for his tireless help to young people; especially to the youth of KM. It is a clear testimony that the young people of this region are together, as one,” he said.
