Summer is here, and there are different activities and places to visit in Central Georgia that are kid-friendly and fun during the summer vacation. Outdoor activities, educational opportunities and more await you and your family right here in Macon. Here are some well-known gems (and some hidden gems) to visit.


The Museum of Arts and Sciences is a great place to take the family to “explore the universe” and “discover the world” through a museum that features different art exhibitions, an observatory, a mini zoo and a planetarium.

  • Cost: Members and children 2 and under are free; Adults cost $ 10, children ages 3 to 17 cost $ 5, seniors and military personnel $ 8, and students $ 7.

If the family is ready to explore and celebrate the rich art and history of African Americans, then The Tubman Museum is one of the best places to go in Macon.

Music-loving Maconites will appreciate the guitars, clothing, photos and other musical artifacts on display at The Allman Brothers Group Museum at the Big House, a museum that celebrates the Allman Brothers Band.

Learn more about Georgia’s long sporting history at Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the county’s largest national sports museum, home to over 3,000 artifacts and showcasing over 400 inductees.

The hay house The signature Italian Renaissance style is the perfect historic home to view one of Georgia’s most distinguished structures.

The Capricorn Museum features “over 1,200 square feet of artifacts, murals and interactive digital kiosks” that celebrate and display the history and impact of Capricorn Records and Capricorn Sound Studios. Artists who have recorded at Capricorn include Otis Redding and the Allman Brothers Band.

The great outdoors

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park is a great place to visit to learn more about Georgia’s cultural heritage and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The site preserves around 17,000 years of history and is very informative for visitors.

Amerson River Park not only has a great view but also offers amenities such as a two mile tube float, children’s play area, kayaking, canoeing, and trails for all of the family.

Tobesofkee Lake is a recreation center located in Central Georgia that offers various activities such as fishing, boating and camping. This facility also has three public parks: Claystone, Sandy Beach and Arrowhead Park with a water park.

Coleman Hill Park is located on one of the highest points in Macon and offers beautiful scenery for a day out with the family.

After the recent expansion of last year, Filmore Thomas Park has more recreational fun for the whole family that includes a playground, nature trail, pavilion, amphitheater, concrete slab, playground and two basketball courts.
