Fancy a break away from the beach? The William R. “Bill” Ellis Memorial Library offers family-friendly activities outdoors as well as inside the air-conditioned comfort of the library building.
All activities are part of the library’s summer reading program, Oceans of Possibilities.
Take the kids for a Story-Walk® at Port Aransas Community Park. Library staff posted a new book along the boardwalk.
“Sylvie,” the story of a little flamingo by Jennifer Sattler, is displayed to be read while walking along the path.
The library provided the following information about the book: “Sylvie comes to learn that being yourself is the best thing to be.
“When she learns that it’s because of the little prawns they eat, Sylvie takes the maxim ‘You are what you eat!’ on a whole new level.
“Her new diet is leading to some very interesting new looks, from scarlet to striped to positive purple.”
The community park is located at 700 Clark Pkwy.
A Bollard Buddy Scavenger Hunt is another activity option.
The task is to find four specific Bollard Buddies located in different locations in the community.
Look for the Pals on bollards at Roberts Point Park, Port Aransas Community Park, Leonabelle Turnbull Birdwatching Center, and near the turtle sculpture at the University of Texas Institute of Marine Science.
After you find all the pals, stop by the library to report finds and receive a cool treat.
Inside the library, visitors will find many books and films to discover.
Library staff have also set up indoor activities to stay out of the heat.
Go on a “shark hunt” by looking for hidden “sharks” throughout the library.
Other activities include a community coloring sheet, feeding the shark fish bean bag toss and playing card games Go Fish, Tic-Tac-Toe, checkers. Also participate in reading challenges.
“When the beach gets too hot, move your underwater activities to the library with an ocean of possibilities,” said Annette Anderson, library clerk.
The library is located at 700 W. Ave. HAS.
It is open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday and Monday.
