Linda Iyawe’s three children were thrilled to go karting that afternoon at the Skyline Luge at Canada Olympic Park, as her family explored the recreation center alongside a few dozen other families who recently arrived in Calgary. .
Iyawe, her husband, and their children moved to town from Nigeria in May, and they were unfamiliar with most of the activities available to families in Calgary.
âThe Center for Newcomers really helped us and when they mentioned this recreation center I thought it was an opportunity to give the kids something to remember and create great memories,â he said. she declared.

The event was hosted by WinSport and funded by Capital Power, a wholesale power producer, through the WinSport Newcomer Program. Founded in 2017, the Newcomer Program connects new Canadians to sport and recreation opportunities in their community.
Judy Black, spokesperson for WinSport, said there were around 85 newcomers who explored Canada Olympic Park and participated in downhill karting, mini-golf and other activities on Monday.

The Newcomer Program is in partnership with the Center for Newcomers, which is a local organization that connects newcomers with needed resources and supports them through a number of services. By Monday, the program had already welcomed more than 300 newcomers to Canada Olympic Park since its launch.
Ayotunde Kayode, Director of Community Relations and Outreach at the Center for Newcomers, explained that the program is a great way to integrate newcomers into their communities and introduce them to Canadian sports.
