Winter brings outdoor fun to state parks

Winter is here and there are plenty of outdoor winter events coming up to celebrate the New Year.

Several Idaho state parks have a day one hiking event on January 1 as well as the annual Free Ski / Winter Access Day the weekend after January 8.

Day 1 hiking events (January 1)

Farragut State Park – Athol. Farragut State Park has a 10 a.m. guided (or snowshoe) hike

Hells Gate State Park – Lewiston. Hells Gate State Park encourages participants to explore self-guided hikes from their 12+ miles of trails.

Harriman State Park: Island Park, Idaho. Enjoy a day one winter hike at Harriman State Park with a three-kilometer guided snowshoe hike. Hot chocolate will be provided!

City of Rocks / Castle Rocks State Park: Almo, Idaho. It’s New Year’s Day adventure! There will be two guided hikes and one Raptors Auto guided tour. Pre-registration is required.

Free Ski / Winter Access Day (Jan. 8)

Note: Free Ski / Winter Access Day is usually on the first Saturday of the year, unless it falls on New Years Day. For 2022, it will be held on the second Saturday. It should also be noted that this does not apply to downhill ski areas and only applies to Idaho Park N Ski locations and various parks.

No permits required at the 17 Park N ‘Ski locations across the state.

Ponderosa State Park – McCall. Come enjoy free winter access to Ponderosa State Park! For free cross-country skiing lessons and snowshoe hikes, pre-registration is required. Check their Facebook page for the latest information.

Farragut State Park – Athol. Come enjoy a day of free winter access to Farragut State Park. Explore the trails on snowshoes or cross-country skis and enjoy the natural beauty of Farragut in winter! Food drive: Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food. Donations will go to the ABC Food Bank in Athol.

Priest Lake State Park – Coolin. Free cross-country skiing lessons plus a guided snowshoe hike and more (like hot coffee and chair massages!)

Harriman State Park – Island Park. Harriman will be hosting a guided hike on January 8, 2022. More information to come. Check out their Facebook page for the latest information!
